Kambo Ceremony

Kambo is a powerful non-psychoactive purgative that comes from the secretion of the Giant Monkey Tree Frog (Phyllomedusa Bicolor). It has been used by various indigenous tribes throughout the rainforests of the Upper Amazon for millennia as a traditional folk medicine to clear away ‘panema’ or dark and negative energies, to energize, cleanse and strengthen the minds and bodies of hunters and to strengthen the immune response to more quickly heal various illnesses from the jungle.

The modern Western use of Kambo covers wide variety mental, emotional and physical issues. In addition to the more obvious physical detoxification and purgative effects, we work with Kambo consciously by identifying and transforming the underlying emotional, thought and behavior patterns that form disease and illness. Kambo is an extremely potent ally to work with when used in this way. It helps us move stagnant energy patterns and gain a newfound sense of clarity and direction.

Ceremonies may be done 1:1 or with others in a Kambo circle held every week. They may be done in the Sacred Ground Medicine office or if its preferred the ceremony can be hosted in the comfort of ones own space. Based on each individuals initial consultation, intentions and what they are working through, there is a variety of different placements and protocols for working with Kambo.

Kambo Ceremony

These energy centers move prana (life-force energy) through the body. When the chakras are blocked or imbalanced, we experience physical and emotional illness.

CHAKRAS

This is the traditional and straightforward placement of gates on the body. This is on the right ankle for women and left arm for men.

TRADITIONAL

Internal energy pathways of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Traditionally used in acupuncture and acupressure. Kambo is believed to strengthen or open

the flow of energy (Qi).

MERIDIANS

The ears are the microcosm of the body connecting to a variety of

functions in the body. Auricular Kambo can be very effective for any number of Iissues and aims to bring the mind and body back into balance.

AURICULAR

Four ways Kambo may be applied on the body:

What to Expect During A Ceremony

Superficial burns are made in through the first layer of skin on the appropriate areas of the body with a small incense stick.

01 - Open the Gates

1.5 liters of water is consumed and the Kambo is then applied to the open gates.

02 - Kambo is Applied

Physical and energetic purging and cleansing occurs for 20-40 minutes.

03 - Detox & Release

Rest is taken and then tea, juice and soup are enjoyed.

04 - Rest

A Kambo ceremony is a powerful process that takes a lot of courage and strength. To use Kambo in conscious way as we do is not a passive or easy path to wellness but one that requires an active participation and responsibility on our end. When we show up grounded in our authenticity with however we are feeling with whatever we are going through and whatever we are seeking, we are facing ourselves and allowing ourselves the space for genuine cleansing and transformation to occur.

After we have thoroughly gone through the list of contraindications and had our initial free consultation to determine if working with Kambo will be beneficial to us where we are at and we make the decision to do so, the process begins. This means that whatever we are working through mentally, emotionally or physically may begin to show up more pronounced before the actual ceremony. This is totally normal.

10-12 hours before the ceremony we fast from food, water and all drugs and alcohol. Small amounts of water or tea are ok in the morning to lightly hydrate and then we will have ceremony. We will open the space and intentions may be directed and we will decide on the number of points and where they will go.

How to Prepare

The gates will then be opened and 1.5 liters of water will be drank as I prepare the Kambo and then it will be applied. The gates are a series of small superficial burns (made with a small incense stick about 3-5mm in diameter) on the skin. These gates allow the Kambo to enter in through the lymphatic system, which is the first to be addressed and flushed out. The water is drank within 15 minutes and is used to aid in the purging process. During this time as you are drinking water, I prepare the Kambo by adding a little water to the dried frog secretion, which is then scraped and formed into around 5 mm balls, known as Kambo dots or points.

If it is your 1st Kambo treatment, or you’ve had Kambo before, but have taken some time between sessions, you will receive a test point. A single Kambo dot is placed on one of the gates and your reaction will be observed with careful attention given to your breathing, heart rate, blood pressure and skin reaction. Assuming the test point goes well, your remaining points will be added.

Once the Kambo is in place the effects are usually felt very quickly. You may experience a pounding sensation in the heart or head, increased heart rate, flushing of the skin and/or swelling in the face, tingling or numbness, inflammation in the throat, increased or lowered blood pressure, nausea, or stomach discomfort. The effects of Kambo are usually only felt between 20-40 minutes and the most difficult part of the session usually lasts around 10 or 15 minutes. It is very common to purge during this time as the body is being cleared of its physical and emotional toxins.

During this time I am there usually in silence and simply holding space to make sure you are all good and safe to do your work with the Kambo. To have your own process. Sometimes medicine songs are used as are other tools detailed below to assist in getting through a blockage if needed, otherwise I am just there to assist when needed. It is always a very personal process, this is where the work is done and the insights are revealed.

After around 20 minutes, if you have purged and the effects are subsiding and your process for the session feels complete we will remove the Kambo and apply Dragon's Blood to the burns. Dragon's Blood (Sangre de Drago) is a natural antiseptic and analgesic liquid that aids in the healing of the burn points and reduces scarring. Burn points usually are not visible after a few months.

After the Dragon's Blood is applied, you will next rest for however long is needed. During this downtime is usually when most will experience a heightened sense of clarity, memory, and tranquility. The process done during ceremony may now begin to reveal deep insight and understanding around the intention and/or illness you are working through. A journal can be useful for this insight and the connections and revelations that may occur during this time.

After you have rested for around 30 minutes or so you may be ready to eat. It is important to provide yourself with nourishment after big physical processing, mental shifts and energy movement. Fresh juice, fruit, tea and soup are key at this point to help rebalance and restore electrolytes in the body.

The body generally recalibrates quickly after the ceremony and you may feel great and energized for your day or may feel like a bit more chill, rest and downtime is in order. It is possible for some slight additional purging like sweat, tears, vomit or bowels to continue afterwards as the energy continues to work its way out of your system. This is why although the whole Kambo process is about 2-4 hours in length and we are always ok after to go about our business, it’s still a good idea to set aside the day for us to process and integrate what was released and the insights that come through.

Other Tools Used

The following are the primary tools I work with that may be utilized before, during and after ceremony to cleanse, protect, move, ground and seal the various energies in the space during the process:

Sanaga - A traditional Amazonian eye medicine that works on physical and spiritual levels. On the physical it can help with glaucoma, cataracts, astigmatism, conjunctivitis, dry and red eyes, photo-phobia, sinusitis and chronic headaches, and can aid in the treatment of chronic pain. Spiritually it is known to aid in opening the third eye, clean and expand the aura and balance the chakras to aid in keeping us balanced mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Traditionally it is also used to clear away ‘panema’, dark and heavy thought form energy.

Sanaga can be used either before a ceremony to help ground and calm the nerves, during to help us release emotions or after to refresh, center and uplift ourselves. It is totally optional of course.

Hape - A finely ground up shamanic snuff  that consists of Mapacho (jungle tobacco) and various other herbs, roots, barks, and leaves. It has a very long history of sacred ceremonial use among Amazonian tribes. It is blown up the nostrils. Since hape is a powerful medicine all on it’s own it is only used during a kambo ceremony as a last resort to remove a blockage and bring on a stuck purge or after if one wishes to ground, center and focus.

Sage, Copal, Cedar, Mapacho (jungle tobacco), Agua de Florida, and Medicine Songs, may or may not be used throughout the ceremony as needed.

*Please notify me beforehand if you have an aversion, sensitivity or allergy to any of them.

Ceremony Process

It is not safe for anyone with the following conditions to use this medicine.

Caution is also required in the following cases:

  • If you take immune-suppressants for auto immune disorders

  • Active drug or alcohol addiction

  • History of bulimia or anorexia

  • Taking slimming/diet pills, serotonin or sleeping supplements (prescription or "natural" sleeping aids)

  • If you take anti-diuretic medication or regularly consume sports drinks

  • If you're epileptic

  • If you have abnormally high or low blood pressure

  • If you have liver or kidney problems

  • If you have asthma or any chronic or serious health issues

  • If you (will) have taken other psychoactive substances within 72 hours prior

  • If you've taken Bufo (5-MeO-DMT/toad medicine) within 6 weeks

  • If you plan to use a sauna or practice hot yoga within 3 days before/after

  • Long term or water fasting for 7 days before or after Kambo (other than the required fasting)

  • Colonics, Enemas, liver flushes or any water based detox should be avoided within 3 days on either side of taking Kambo

If you are menstruating at the time of treatment, Kambo may well cause the flow to increase for 24- 36 hours because it contains powerful vasodilators and you might experience slight additional cramping (rare) if you take it in the first two days. But it’s absolutely fine to take it as your body is already set to release on those special days. If you are asthmatic ensure that you have your inhaler with you. If you are diabetic let me know in advance.

You must inform me if you have ever or are currently suffering from a mental health condition, regardless of whether or not you are taking medication. If you’re on regular anti-depressants, just don’t take them

on the evening before having Kambo the next day. You can take them right after the treatment. Other medication has different time frames, so please let me know what you’re taking for any condition, not just mental health.

In most cases it is usually completely safe for you to continue taking your normal medication but we need to discuss this beforehand so please review all of the information and let me know during the intake process.

Even if you feel amazing after treatment, please don’t just stop taking anti-depressants or other medication cold turkey without a plan and supervision. That said, Kambo with or without other herbs I work with have shown extremely effective in assisting people to permanently get off of medications they have been on for years. These are very specific protocols that are unique to each individual and must be followed. Please let me know if you are interested in this and we will discuss if it’s appropriate as it can be life changing when you feel stuck in this situation.

If you’re on contraceptives, please keep in mind that they might not be effective if you purge them out. So take them after the treatment or use extra caution that month.

One thing to note is something that in the medical world is called a Herxheimer reaction and in the traditional medical system I was trained in we refer to is as 'when the medicine collides with the illness'. This is essentially when whatever you are working through gets worse before it gets better as the holistic process of the treatments begin to bring the issue(s) to the surface and work their way out of our system. This can be a physical detox as things continue to purge out through the skin and bowels as well as our suppressed anger, sadness, grief, etc. coming to the surface and we may feel them more strongly for a period. This is all a good sign that the treatments are in effect and doing their job. At this point it is our job to trust, be patient and gentle with ourselves and pay attention to the gifts and lessons being revealed during the process.

Additional Treatments

Intensive Treatments

An intensive treatment is a protocol of daily or bi-daily treatments over the course of 1-3 weeks. Serious health conditions like Cancer and Severe Depression, as an example, are conditions that can hugely benefit from large amounts of Kambo in short periods of time.

Short bursts of intensive treatments can also greatly aid in healing chronic health conditions like Chronic Fatigue, Thyroid Conditions, Medium Depression, Arthritis, Rheumatism, and Migraines. The initial intensive days are followed by continuing treatment over a longer period of time afterwards.

This method of intense treatments can also be used as a primary or additional treatment for infertility, repairing the immune system after chemo or a virus, infections, viral conditions, mild depression, sever fungal conditions, major detox, addictions and more.

Long Term Treatments

Almost every condition can be treated and benefited from a long-term treatment. We would typically start with 3 treatments in 3 days and then proceed as needed per condition. Examples of where this would be apply would be HIV, Diabetes, long term pain relief, genital Herpes, Lyme Disease, Parkinsons Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, etc.

No frogs are harmed during the process of collecting the Kambo. The medicine used is always of the highest quality and ethically sourced directly from the Mastes tribe, whom have a long and reverent relationship with Kambo. The frogs gather to sing and announce the rain and this song is imitated to locate and draw out the frogs during collection. The frogs are easy to catch and handle, likely because they have few to no predators. Once caught, the frogs are carefully and delicately tied by the legs with straw strings, spreading the frog into an X shape. Tribe members will then massage the frogs in order to encourage the secretion, a portion of which is then carefully removed and dried onto small bamboo sticks.

When properly collected, tribe members are careful to only take the first secretion. This ensures the medicine is strong and that the frog has plenty of its secretion left. After the harvest is complete, the frog is marked with a white circle that will ensure tribes do not harvest from this frog again till it fades in 3 months. The frog is carefully released and returns to its natural habitat unharmed. The frogs are treated with the utmost care, and aren’t dangerous or defensive. They are even known to come back willingly when called upon again. The frogs are never harmed as the tribes believe that to upset or harm the frogs will bring negative consequences, so they are careful to always treat the frogs with care and respect.

Our Kambo is sourced from and directly supports the Mastes communities.

How is Kambo Harvested?

Kambo is a highly complex cocktail of bioactive peptides. ‘Bioactive’ here simply means they have a specific biological function within the living organism. So they are recognized by the body as its own and thus unlocks its cells to them instead blocking them as foreign and creating stress and leaving behind a residue. Peptides are short chains of amino acids. A longer chain of amino acids is called a protein. Examples of naturally occurring peptides in the human body include oxytocin, endorphin and insulin. Amino acids are often referred to as the building blocks of all human life. This means that Kambo is made from the same basic ingredients that humans are.

There is a wide array of peptides, neuropeptides and biopeptides that have very specific functions in the human body including neurotransmission, pain relief, anti-inflammation, detoxification, immune system boosting, hormone balance, antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-parasitic and much more.

The Kambo frog secretion contains at least 16 bioactive peptides, and there are currently more than 70 patents filed on their analogues. This peptide-rich secretion enters through your lymphatic system, which allows a very rapid distribution to other bodily systems. These compounds increase circulation and sensory perception, influence the release of endorphins, boost the immune system, and have analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Much of human diseases can be attributed to inflammation and activation of the stress system. The peptides found in Kambo have been shown to have beneficial effects on autoimmune conditions, killing parasites, lyme disease, fibromyalgia and chronic pain, there is even anecdotal evidence of and regular use among the Amazonian tribal women for its assistance in overcoming infertility as well as enhances libido/fertility in men as a natural side effect of the way it strengthens our immune and circulatory systems.

Kambo’s many peptides include within them a number of exorphins, which are similar to endorphins, but are produced by amphibians and don’t exist naturally in the human body. Kambo’s effects on our opioid system are more powerful than that of morphine. A number of these effects come from the actions of specific exorphins on your mu-opioid receptors, which can produce pain-relief and a sense of well-being, in part by causing the release of the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine. This effect can last long after you take Kambo, because it works to recalibrate and reset your brain’s opioid and serotonergic systems. It’s possible that Kambo’s effects on the brain are so strong because certain peptides increase the permeability of your blood-brain barrier. Another exorphin, deltorphin, binds to your delta opioid receptors, which can also induce pain relief. It may actually prime these receptors to become more sensitive, leading to increased responsiveness of the body's natural opioid system and improvement of certain chronic pain conditions well after you receive Kambo.

Kambo’s purgative effects likely come from the actions of tachykinin peptides and opioid activation of dopamine pathways affecting the area postrema, your brain’s vomiting center. It’s possible that once you purge, there’s nothing left, and the fat-soluble toxins are bound to bile in your upper and lower GI tract and get excreted. Kambo may even help fight infections, as its dermaseptin peptides can help to reduce bacteria by increasing the activity of white blood cells called lymphocytes.

Two other peptides from Kambo could also cause your blood vessels to dilate and as a result, your blood pressure will spike and you will feel flushed. When your blood pressure drops back down your gut will release serotonin. Typically, people will feel some discomfort for the 20-30 minutes that the Kambo is taking effect, but then will most likely feel reinvigorated after. As a result of these vasodilating actions, many people with migraines may find that their migraines worsen while sitting with Kambo, but the likelihood of future migraines are significantly reduced following their session.

Recent scientific studies have been focusing on specific peptides as opposed to the totality of the secretion. Kambo contains peptides that have been shown to kill in vitro cancer cells, peptides that are 30 to 40 times more potent than morphine without any negative side effects, peptides that reduce blood pressure, modify satiety, sedation and thermoregulation, peptides that demonstrate potent antimicrobial activity against bacteria, yeast, fungi, protozoa and enveloped viruses and because Kambo is able to cross the blood-brain barrier, neuropeptides that are active in the central and peripheral nervous system.

Kambo Peptides

The beneficial nature of the peptides in Kambo has led to more than 70 patents being lodged by scientists and pharmaceutical companies, all in the hope that they can replicate the many benefits of Kambo.

The following are 11 well-known peptides that have been isolated in the Kambo secretion. It is a blend that is completely unique to this frog medicine.

Phyllocaerulein – a neuropeptide (a special type of peptide that helps neurons communicate in the brain) that reduces blood pressure, modifies satiety (stomach fullness), and manages sedation and thermoregulation. It is also a potent pain killer.

Phyllokinin – a peptide that reduces blood pressure in the long-term, and crosses the blood-brain barrier to help take Kambo’s benefits to the brain.

Phyllomedusin – a neuropeptide (unique to Kambo) that acts as a powerful vasodilator, widening and relaxing blood vessels, veins, and arteries.

Dermorphin – a chain that acts on opioid receptors to reduce pain. It is 30-40 times more potent than morphine.

Deltorphin – another peptide that interacts with opioid receptors, showing higher selectivity for them than any compound known to man. There are 2 Deltorphins in Kambo, adding to its strong pain-killing properties.

Dermaseptin – a peptide with potent antimicrobial effects against bacteria, yeast, fungi, protozoa, and even enveloped viruses.

Adenoregulin – a peptide that has been shown to be very effective in killing cancer cells, effectively turning off their fuel supply.

Tryptophyllin – a peptide that has been shown to be highly potent against the yeast Candida Albicans.

Phyllolitorin, [Leu8] Phyllolitorin, Rohdei-Litorin – 3 neuropeptides that stimulate gastric acid secretion and smooth muscle contraction.

Science of Kambo

A Kaxinawá legend tells that the Indians of the tribe were very ill and their medicine man (Pajé in Brazil) had done everything that was possible to cure them. All medicinal herbs known were used, but none helped. Under the effect of a sacred plant medicine (Ayahuasca), he entered the forest and whilst there received a visit from the Queen of the Forest. She brought in her hands a frog, from which she took a white secretion, and taught the Pajé how to apply it. Returning to the tribe and following the guidelines that he had received, the Pajé was able to heal his tribe members. From then on he was known as Pajé Kampu. After his death, his spirit lived on in the frog where it continued its mission to protect the health of those who defend the forest. The Indians continue to use its secretion to stay active and healthy. The secretion became known as Kambô but in some tribes it is called Sapo, Kampu or Vacina da Floresta. Its usage spread and it is still used widely amongst indigenous people in the Amazon to this day although the rituals vary from tribe to tribe.

Although the use of Kambo goes back thousands of years as a traditional medicine within Amazonian indigenous tribes, the first documentation of Kambo was made in 1925 by french priest father Constantin Tastevin and then later by American anthropologist Katherine Milton in the 1980s. Shortly after, Peter Gorman experienced sapo with the Matses in Peru. Many tribes across the upper Amazon region claim Kambo, or Sapo as it is known in Peru, as their own, although there is no one tribe credited with discovering it. The frogs are found in Peru, Brazil, Bolivia, Columbia, Ecuador, French Guyana and Venezuela, but the largest use of Kambo among indigenous people is in Brazil and Peru. The Kaxinawá, Katukina, Yawanawá, Kulina, Mayoruna, Amahuaca and Matsés are among the most frequent users. Kambo has been used for so long and so extensively that each tribe has developed its own legend. It truly is the medicine of many tribes and man.

There are numerous stories of Kambo being used for sexual attraction, fertility and behavioral correction. Many of the traditional uses of Kambo are held closely by the women of the Amazonian tribes and are rarely if never shared with outsiders.
